SPEAKING OF SADNESS AND DEPRESSION.

Why do we feel sad? The reason for a bout of sadness can come from many different reasons. For example, a sudden job loss can cause sadness as one struggles with losing a stable income. “Just how am I going to make ends meet? The job market is not good right now!”

Gloom can result from losing a loved one or the abrupt ending of a relationship. How many have felt a heavy heart of grief and loneliness over having to say goodbye? The tears flow freely, and pain seems to bubble up just as you think you have accepted your loss.

Sadness can come from an illness, rejection, misunderstanding, or misusing. It is usual for us to feel this emotion from time to time. But, just as we feel happy and laugh, there are times when our smile turns upside down. Sadness can be a frown when we are down, isn’t that right?

However, sadness can manifest itself as depression. Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It can be temporary or last much longer. For example, losing a child, pet, or loved one will cause sadness and lead to a bout of depression. But After a while, we accept the loss, grieve, and slowly heal. It is a normal part of the cycle of loss and sadness.

There is another form of depression that can be severe. In nature, We call that clinical depression. Clinical depression is the more-severe form of depression, also known as major depression or major depressive disorder. It isn’t the same as depression caused by a loss, such as the death of a loved one, or a medical condition, such as a thyroid disorder.

This major depressive disorder, or clinical depression, affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to various emotional and physical problems. Suddenly a frown and tears can lead to a life paralyzed by feeling defeated. What was once sadness and a bit of grief has now become a persistent feeling of hopelessness and despair.

When one suffers clinical depression, it must first be diagnosed. Then it is handled with the appropriate treatment protocol. At Commitment to Hope, our therapist can treat sadness and depression.
