CareSource members in Ohio can use the plan’s provider directory to search for behavioral health professionals, including counselors, social workers, psychologists, and marriage and family therapists. Ohio Medicaid also includes counseling and psychotherapy among its covered behavioral health services. (Ohio Medicaid)

How to Find a Therapist Who Accepts CareSource in Ohio

Start by confirming which CareSource plan you have. CareSource offers different plan types, and a therapist who accepts one CareSource plan may not participate with another.

Your insurance card should identify whether you have:

  • CareSource Ohio Medicaid

  • CareSource Marketplace

  • CareSource MyCare

  • another CareSource plan

Use the exact plan name when contacting a counseling practice.

Use the CareSource Provider Directory

CareSource provides a Find a Doctor tool that allows members to search for participating providers by plan, location, specialty, and service type. (CareSource)

When searching, look under behavioral health categories such as:

  • counseling

  • clinical counseling

  • social work

  • psychology

  • marriage and family therapy

Provider directories can change, so confirm participation directly with the counseling practice before scheduling.

Ask Whether the Therapist Accepts Your Specific Plan

Do not ask only, “Do you accept CareSource?”

Instead, provide:

  • your full CareSource plan name

  • your member identification number

  • your date of birth

  • the type of counseling you are requesting

This allows the provider’s billing team to check whether the therapist participates with your plan.

Verify Eligibility and Benefits

Being listed as a CareSource provider does not automatically guarantee that every service will be covered.

The therapist or billing team may need to verify:

  • whether your coverage is active

  • whether the therapist is in network

  • whether the requested service is covered

  • whether authorization is required

  • whether there are visit limits or other plan requirements

  • whether you may have a copayment or other responsibility

Coverage should be verified before the first appointment whenever possible.

Decide What Type of Counseling You Need

Before contacting a therapist, identify the main reason you are seeking care.

This may include:

  • anxiety or depression

  • trauma

  • grief

  • relationship concerns

  • teen counseling

  • family counseling

  • stress or major life changes

Providing this information helps the practice determine whether the therapist’s experience and availability match your needs.

Ask About Telehealth

Telehealth can make it easier to find a CareSource therapist when local availability is limited.

A licensed Ohio therapist may provide online counseling to eligible clients located in Ohio during their sessions. Ask whether the provider offers telehealth and whether your specific CareSource plan covers the requested service.
