CareSource Ohio Medicaid members may have access to online therapy through telehealth. CareSource states that members can use a smartphone, tablet, or computer to meet with medical and mental health providers without traveling to an office. Coverage still depends on the member’s exact plan, active eligibility, provider participation, and the counseling service requested.

Does CareSource Cover Online Therapy in Ohio?

CareSource offers telehealth options for behavioral health concerns such as:

  • anxiety;

  • depression;

  • stress;

  • trauma;

  • substance-use concerns;

  • relationship issues;

  • other mental health needs.

CareSource advises members to check with the provider to confirm that telehealth is available. Mental health appointments generally must be scheduled in advance.

What Is Online Therapy?

Online therapy allows a client and therapist to meet remotely by secure video or, when permitted, another approved telehealth method.

The client typically participates from home using:

  • a smartphone

  • a tablet

  • a laptop or

  • a desktop computer with internet access.

The client must be physically located in Ohio during the appointment when receiving services from an Ohio-licensed therapist.

Confirm Your Specific CareSource Plan

CareSource offers more than one type of insurance plan. A therapist who accepts one CareSource plan may not participate with every CareSource product.

Before scheduling, check your insurance card for the full plan name and provide it to the counseling practice.

The therapist or billing team may request:

  • your CareSource member identification number;

  • your date of birth;

  • the policyholder’s information, when applicable;

  • the reason you are requesting counseling; and

  • confirmation that you are seeking telehealth services.

Verify That the Therapist Is In Network

CareSource generally requires members to receive covered care from participating providers, although exact requirements depend on the plan.

Before the first appointment, confirm:

  • that your coverage is active;

  • that the therapist participates with your CareSource plan;

  • that online counseling is covered;

  • whether authorization is required;

  • whether the requested service has any limitations; and

  • whether you have any financial responsibility.

CareSource recommends confirming that a provider is still in network and accepting new patients.

What Happens During an Online Therapy Appointment?

An online therapy appointment generally follows the same clinical process as an in-person counseling session.

During the initial intake, the therapist may:

  • review your current concerns;

  • discuss your mental health history;

  • assess symptoms and treatment needs;

  • explain confidentiality and telehealth procedures;

  • discuss treatment goals; and

  • determine whether online therapy is clinically appropriate.

You should participate from a private, quiet location whenever possible.

Benefits of Online Therapy

Online therapy may be helpful for people who:

  • have limited transportation;

  • live far from an available therapist;

  • have work, school, or family scheduling demands;

  • prefer receiving counseling from home;

  • need access to a broader selection of Ohio therapists; or

  • have difficulty attending office appointments.

CareSource states that telehealth can reduce the time and transportation demands associated with visiting an office. (Caresource)
