Ohio Medicaid members have access to behavioral health services, including counseling and psychotherapy. Finding the right therapist requires confirming your Medicaid plan, locating a participating provider, and verifying that the requested counseling service is covered. (Ohio Medicaid)

How to Find a Medicaid Therapist in Ohio

Start by identifying your exact Ohio Medicaid plan. Many Ohio Medicaid members receive coverage through a managed care plan, and each plan maintains its own provider network.

Check your insurance card for the name of your plan before contacting a therapist.

Search Your Medicaid Plan’s Provider Directory

Visit your Medicaid plan’s website and use its provider directory to search for behavioral health professionals.

Search under terms such as:

  • counselor

  • therapist

  • behavioral health

  • clinical social worker

  • professional counselor

  • marriage and family therapist

Ohio Medicaid advises members to visit their managed care plan’s website for its provider directory.

Confirm That the Therapist Accepts Your Specific Plan

Do not ask only whether the practice accepts Medicaid.

Provide:

  • the full name of your Medicaid plan

  • your member identification number

  • your date of birth

  • the type of counseling you are requesting

A therapist may accept one Ohio Medicaid plan but not participate with every Medicaid managed care plan.

Verify Eligibility and Benefits

Before scheduling, allow the therapist or billing team to verify:

  • whether your Medicaid coverage is active

  • whether the therapist participates with your plan

  • whether the requested service is covered

  • whether prior authorization is required

  • whether there are plan-specific requirements

Being listed in a provider directory does not guarantee that every therapist, location, or counseling service is currently covered.

Consider Telehealth Counseling

Telehealth may provide more options when local therapists have limited availability.

Ask whether:

  • the therapist offers online counseling

  • the therapist is licensed to serve clients in Ohio

  • your Medicaid plan covers the requested telehealth service

  • the therapist is accepting new clients

Choose a Therapist Based on Your Counseling Needs

Consider the main reason you are seeking counseling, such as:

  • anxiety or depression

  • trauma

  • grief

  • couples or relationship concerns

  • teen counseling

  • family counseling

  • stress or life changes

This helps the practice determine whether a therapist’s experience and availability fit your needs.
